Abstract
Works of contemporary women writers have often been put in the margins of “seriousliterature”. Studies on contemporary Indonesian women writers of the post -Reformasi period mainly focuses on the literary study of sastra wangi literature and the burgeoning sastra Islam which mainly takes up issues regarding women. This thesis intends to highlight Okky Madasari and her literary works as a woman writer who challenges the stereotype thatwomen writer only take up issues about themselves. A thorough reading and analysis of Okky’s novels and short stories will portray Okky’s commitment in engaging with social issues and predicaments in her works. She raises critical and taboo issues of the day andnarrates the predicaments of her Indonesian society through fiction, written with moral and intellectual courage and discernment.
